How hot is it?

I went to the bank this morning and sat at the drive through, listening to this. And this is what it sounds like around my house.

I swear, it could be 10°F outside, and hearing those would make me start to sweat.

Maybe it’s because I’ve always lived in warm climates, but the sound of cicadas is forever in the background of…well, everything that happens outside, in all but the coldest times of year. It’s one of those sensory things, like the lovely smell as it starts to rain*, that triggers a memory or an emotional response. Cicadas = blistering sun in the daytime. Or sultry warm nights (and if that sounds pleasant to you, you live someplace much cooler than here). Those cicada songs—that’s what hot weather sounds like.

Well, and this.

All the cicada sounds are from , and a fine website it is, too. Except it makes me sweat.

*Petrichor is what that smell is called, in case it happens to come up.
