If you don&#8217;t live in DFW\/North Texas, it may seem silly to even mention it, but our area was <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chron.com\/healthzone\/2013\/05\/cdc-texas-leads-the-nation-in-2012-west-nile-cases\/\" target=\"_blank\">West Nile Virus Central last summer<\/a>. Texas had a third of all the cases in the U.S., and the majority of them were in the Metroplex.<b><span style=\"color: red;\">*<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So a mosquito bite is something to notice.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but I got bitten while in the area of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dshs.state.tx.us\/news\/releases\/20130524a.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Tarrant County&#8217;s first 2013 West Nile-positive mosquito<\/a> (they trap and test them, that&#8217;s how they know). See?<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mosquito-bite-map.jpg\" style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" border=\"0\" height=\"304\" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Mosquito-bite-map-300x284.jpg\" width=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">The good news, of course, is that most people who get West Nile Virus don&#8217;t even know it. They never have any symptoms at all. And for a long time, it was only people with underlying health problems or compromised immune systems who developed the serious neuroinvasive form of the disease. But a young man with no health problems died from WNV last summer, so obviously no one is completely safe. The CDC and&nbsp;Texas Department of State Health Services continues to stress that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dshs.state.tx.us\/news\/releases\/20130524a.aspxhttp:\/\/www.tarrantcounty.com\/ehealth\/lib\/ehealth\/WNV.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">best way to avoid getting sick is to avoid getting bitten<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">So much for that.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">Anyway, today I started feeling queasy. And my stomach was a little upset (I won&#8217;t go into detail about that part). I remembered my mosquito bite, and quickly looked up the incubation period.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">3 to 14 days. Uh-oh.<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">I was all ready to go into full I&#8217;ve-got-the-vapors mode, assuming I was deathly ill and just praying it wouldn&#8217;t advance to neurological impairment\u2026when I looked up the symptoms. The mild symptoms are:<\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both;\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Body aches<\/li>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Back pain<\/li>\n<li>Skin rash (occasionally)<\/li>\n<li>Swollen lymph glands (occasionally)<\/li>\n<li>Eye pain (occasionally)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Uh, nope. Well, except for fatigue, which could definitely be explained by the fact that I stayed up &#8217;til 1:00am reading, then woke up at 6:30 this morning and couldn&#8217;t get back to sleep. The queasiness could possibly have been caused by that Grande <a href=\"http:\/\/www.starbucks.com\/menu\/drinks\/espresso\/iced-hazelnut-macchiato#size=11025555&amp;milk=67\" target=\"_blank\">Iced Hazelnut Macchiato<\/a> I guzzled down in about three minutes flat this afternoon. (I fervently desired caffeine, because of my lack of sleep. Vicious circle, I guess.)<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it looks like I do <b><i>not<\/i><\/b> have West Nile Virus, and hoorah for that! I think to celebrate I&#8217;ll go enjoy some all-American pizza while we stream <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0068156\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\">1776<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Happy (and healthy) Independence Day to you and yours.
