{"id":1267,"date":"2018-06-01T14:34:51","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T19:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/?p=1267"},"modified":"2018-06-01T14:39:25","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T19:39:25","slug":"what-to-do-with-these","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/?p=1267","title":{"rendered":"What to do with these?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m finally starting to organize the metric ton of stuff we brought back from Denver when we shut down housekeeping for Rich&#8217;s parents.\u00a0When I say starting, I mean I took the stack of cookbooks that belonged to my mother-in-law and <strong>her<\/strong> mother, and started going through them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stack-of-cookbooks-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1274\" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stack-of-cookbooks-1-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stack-of-cookbooks-1-290x300.jpg 290w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stack-of-cookbooks-1-768x794.jpg 768w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Stack-of-cookbooks-1-991x1024.jpg 991w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I really don&#8217;t know what to do with them.<\/p>\n<p>From what I can tell, they&#8217;re not going to be of interest to collectors, but they&#8217;re fascinating to me, for both sentiment and the glimpse of the era that they provide.<\/p>\n<p>I have one old cookbook from my own mother that I wouldn&#8217;t trade for anything. It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/ebay.to\/2sEOoHh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rumford Baking Powder cookbook, published in 1939<\/a>, and it refers to &#8220;the new temperature method&#8221; of heating an oven. It also contains a recipe for Toast Broth. (You make toast, soak it in warm water, strain the water, and give it to someone who&#8217;s been sick and doesn&#8217;t feel like eating, and they&#8217;re supposed to drink it.)<\/p>\n<p>Really, I&#8217;ve loved looking through this cookbook!<\/p>\n<p>My late grandmother-in-law was gone long before I joined the family, so I don&#8217;t have the same sentimental attachment to her stuff. But there&#8217;s so much history in these, both family and otherwise!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-flyleaf.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1280 \" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-flyleaf-e1527878856323-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-copyright.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-1279 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-copyright-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>A couple of them are copyrighted in 1930, and one in 1943. The printed pages are interesting, and if you find yourself in need of a recipe for Italian Delight, or Harvard Sauce and Egg for Beets, just DM me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1278\" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-4-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-4-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-4-768x620.jpg 768w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/CDN-Cookbook-4-1024x826.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s the\u00a0newspaper clippings, notes, handwritten recipes,\u00a0receipts, and other detritus<sup>1<\/sup> that are so captivating.\u00a0GMIL filled out an order form for &#8220;absolutely without charge, a full size package of Climalene,&#8221;<sup>2<\/sup> which I suppose she never got. A few recipes indicate how many ration points (2 Red points, 4 Blue points) you&#8217;d need to buy the ingredients. Maybe I&#8217;ll look through them every now and then. They might have a better recipe for Toast Broth.<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> Including the words &#8220;Cream Puff&#8221; written on a scrap of a Walgreen&#8217;s bag.
