But the graphs that hockey analysts post or tweet are kind of coated in mental Teflon as far as I&#8217;m concerned. Most of them don&#8217;t mean much to me at first glance, and I guess I just don&#8217;t care enough to stop and figure out what\u00a0data they&#8217;re presenting. &#8220;I guess I don&#8217;t.&#8221; Well, I was trying to state it gently. I know these graphs &amp; charts must be jam-packed with information I&#8217;d probably find fascinating\u2014I&#8217;m quite sure of it, in fact\u2014but I&#8217;m not willing to spend two nanoseconds deciphering it.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why, exactly, I can&#8217;t be bothered. But it&#8217;s a stone cold fact: they glide across my consciousness without causing\u00a0so much as a ripple.<\/p>\n<p>Of all the hockey analytics that mean nothing to me, this type is penultimate in my don&#8217;t-get-it-ness:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1175\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 300px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bar-graph.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1175 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bar-graph-300x251.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bar-graph-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bar-graph-768x642.jpg 768w, https:\/\/originalorknot.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Bar-graph.jpg 867w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>I assume above the line = good, below the line = bad. Away from the line = better than close to the line? I just look at it and see a river.<\/em><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>I <strong>am<\/strong> a very visual learner, and graphs should mean a lot to me, but the whole thing seems a little bit silly. I&#8217;d rather that you just use your words.<\/p>\n<p>(Please, no offense meant to anyone who creates these or loves &amp; depends on analytics. Perhaps it&#8217;s just not for everyone, the same way Bartok or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Salty_liquorice\" target=\"_blank\">salmiakki<\/a> aren&#8217;t.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m actually a pretty smart person, and I \u00a0have plenty of respect for analytical types.
